The power of community

to create a better Australia

Greener, fairer, prosperous, alive with opportunities for all.

The Community Independents Project (CIP)

was borne out of a commitment to putting everyday people at the centre of Australian politics. It is a collaboration to enable and support communities and Community Independents to build participatory democracy and conduct successful election campaigns.

CIP is values driven and focused beyond the electoral cycle for the greater good of society, the environment and the economy.

Democracy is not a spectator sport

The Community Independents movement is people powered, purposeful and collaborative, united by wanting genuine community representation and propelled by the urgency of the issues that face us.

CIP supports the movement by connecting, networking, sharing resources and practical help and amplifying how and why community independents can change Australian politics for the better.

Empowered communities showed what was possible

on 21 May 2022 with the election of 6 new Community Independents and an Independent Senator. Other communities made their seat marginal, some are just at the beginning of their journey.

Where Community Independents have been elected, they are working with their community and their community is working with them, a two-way relationship that will continue to strengthen our democracy.

This is the launchpad for a new way of doing politics

Imagine what we can achieve together

Community Independents put community at the centre of politics

Community Independents:

  • genuinely represent their community

  • reflect the values and views of their electorates

  • have a ‘compact’ with their community that guides their actions

  • empower their communities through collaborating and partnering with them

  • have processes for their communities to actively participate in politics

  • are co-creating with their communities real political change in Australia.

Community Independents are not:

  • members of parties

  • representatives of sector interests or politics

  • single issues politicians

  • self appointed.

Community Independents emerge from a bottom up process initiated by the community.

There is no prescriptive process used by communities or their representatives to best put community at the centre of politics. Each electorate sets their own path and agreed values and behaviours.

Community Independents are answerable solely to their constituents and the nation.
