Communities In Action:

Strengthening Democracy Together

Online | 5 & 6 Sept | 30+ Speakers

Community Independents Project (CIP)

was born out of a commitment to putting everyday people at the centre of Australian politics. It is a collaboration to enable and support communities and Community Independents to build participatory democracy and conduct successful election campaigns.

CIP is values driven and focused beyond the electoral cycle for the greater good of society, the environment and the economy.

We are pleased to be able to connect, network, support and amplify the work of communities like these:

Democracy is not a spectator sport - it thrives when everyday people get involved

The Community Independents movement is people-powered and purpose-driven, built on collaboration, integrity and a deep belief in genuine community representation. In a time of urgent challenges, it's a movement that empowers communities to lead, act and shape the future of Australian politics. The Community Independents Project supports this work by connecting people and communities, sharing resources and tools, and amplifying the impact of community-led leadership that is reshaping democracy from the ground up.

Doing politics differently

Community Independents:

  • genuinely represent their community

  • reflect the values and views of their electorates

  • have a ‘compact’ with their community - a two-way relationship that guides their actions

  • empower their communities through collaborating and partnering with them

  • have processes for their communities to actively participate in politics

  • are co-creating with their communities real political change in Australia.

Community Independents ARE NOT:

  • members of parties

  • representatives of sector interests or politics

  • single issues politicians

  • self appointed.

Community Independents emerge from a bottom up process initiated by the community. There is no prescriptive process used by communities or their representatives to best put community at the centre of politics. Each electorate sets their own path and agreed values and behaviours.

Community Independents are answerable solely to their constituents and the nation.
